Walcott Quarry

I was excited to see a part of history, but then the hike itself and the spectacular views were a total bonus and made the day for me ...
Our guide Cam was totally awesome. He was a super friendly, knowledgeable guy and he was really just fun to be around. He was super patient with us and answered all of our dumb questions. I didn’t expect to learn so much about geology honestly but having him along was a bonus. Anyone who would sign up for this is probably looking for the same experience.
Staying in Field actually turned out to be a great part of the experience. I’ve driven by there so many times and never realized what a cool little town it is. I’ll be back!

Walcott Quarry

Geoff was very personable and I was amazed at all the information he could keep in his head. The most memorable part was his description of condensing 505 million years into one.
The weather (after the snow/rain of the previous day) was glorious. Clear, sunny, and the views were astounding. Also, was nice to have a very congenial group.

Walcott Quarry

Thank you for an excellent hike. Our guide, Annie, was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and kind. She really did an excellent job fostering good group dynamics and ensuring that each hiker felt looked after and included. By the end of the hike, I felt like I had four new friends. Annie was very good about pace - fast when the group was humming along and slow when we wanted to stop and look at birds or needed to catch our breath. She was very accommodating and watched the birds alongside us, as curious as we were. That meant a lot to me, that she was just as enthusiastic about the birds as the geology. I never felt rushed. It was pretty much a perfect day with good weather, guest appearances by a marmot and mountain goats, and plenty of time to look through the quarry ... Thank you, Annie, for all you did to make it a special day for us!

Mount Stephen Fossil Beds

We loved the hike! Rob and Kathy were amazing guides, patient with the group in teaching us about the site and in guiding hikers of different abilities and speed. The rain made the path difficult to traverse, but the guides broke up the ascent well with times to rest and to learn. Well worth the effort!
Scheduling was also easy when we phoned on April 1. It's always nice to speak with someone in person when signing up for guided tours.

Mount Stephen Fossil Beds

Thanks for a great day. My kids, my spouse and I had a great time. I was impressed by Hugh's knowledge and willingness to share the knowledge - only out-done by his willingness to listen to my daughter babble on for hours while he coaxed her up the mountain. He was the best guide that I have ever had on any similar outing ...

Walcott Quarry

The hike was excellent, and our guide, Geoff, did a stellar job. He competently explained the basics of geology, plate tectonics, the geological time scale, fossilization, the Cambrian Explosion and the significance of the Burgess Shale. He is also up on recent literature on the topic. We had some great discussions.

Mount Stephen Fossil Beds

Thank you for providing such an amazing educational and hiking experience.
I was particularly impressed with the background knowledge and teaching skills of our guide, Geoff, who got us safely up Mt Stephen on Monday and back down again. We had detailed and engaging conversations about convergent evolution, the history of the Walcott quarry and related discoveries, the controversies about Stephen Jay Gould's book, and new findings in the Marble Canyon site. Geoff was definitely the magical ingredient that made the trip memorable. My 13 year old son really learned a lot and will be talking about it for years to come.
I will be recommending this hiking and interpretive activity to my colleagues and friends with kids who are interested in dinosaurs or other topics.

I found the day to be fantastic and would do it again tomorrow... Geoff was great - the pace was just right, he delivered the perfect amount of information. I enjoyed being with the family group and I am glad you offer that option - I will bring my kids one day. Thanks for the follow up email and further reading links.

The hike was amazing!! Really mind blowing. Our guide Malcolm was fantastic, informative, patient with everyone and set a good pace. His lessons were great and his geology knowledge really contributed to the experience.
Recommendations from the boys are a zip line from the shale down to Field or a teleportation device directly to the Truffle Pig.

The guide, Cam, was excellent, very knowledgeable. The climb was a difficult one. The breaks were set up very well.
What would have made the experience even better? An elevator.
Everything was great, could not have been done better.

Walcott Quarry

... Annie is very knowledgeable, and of course, Kathy is too. It was not as strenuous as I was afraid it would be - but we took our time getting there. The views of glaciers, waterfalls, lakes, etc were spectacular. I appreciated that Annie pointed out the local geology and explained it to us - a great geoscience experience! Getting to see the Burgess shale up close and personal like that with just our group was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Seeing the mountain goats at the site was a bonus. Annie and Kathy were both great. I would recommend this trip to anyone and will to everyone I can.

... The stops and talks along the way were very informative and adapted to the interests of the participants - we learned a lot! We really enjoyed Annie's and Kathy's personalities, wealth of knowledge and sense of humor. They definitely added to the experience... It was a fantastic experience all around.

Walcott Quarry

The whole hike and experience was awesome. Hugh and Gary looked after our group extremely well and very professionally!
Please give special note and thanks to Hugh. His enthusiasm and sincerity not only at the start, but during the day and especially at the end of a long hike was great!! He also took the time to explain, discuss and visit with every member of the group. Finally, and not least, he explained very professionally, in geological terms and common terms, all our questions (mostly mine), regarding fossils, mountain formations and the many geological periods...

... Hugh was gracious and good-natured and in fact, made us all feel as though we were in a lively seminar group. I guess that’s really what it was. We all learned a great deal more than we knew at the outset. He is a terrific teacher. Gary was an unassuming, gentle force at the back ...giving me almost wordless moral support as well as the physical support of his poles, which made a great difference. Both these men were like bookends keeping a pace that we could manage with never a hint of frustration...

The hike was extremely enjoyable! Our guide, Hugh, was absolutely amazing. He was very knowledgeable, easygoing and funny. His passion for the outdoors was very evident and this made the hike even more enjoyable. Just as this hike was highly recommended to me, I will be recommending it to others. I will also be recommending Hugh as a guide. Thanks for a great experience!

Walcott Quarry

We had an outstanding time on our recent hike. Our guides, Cam and Malcolm, were exceptional. They were warm, engaging and very informative. The weather cooperated fully as well which helped immeasurably I’m sure! We were very impressed with the quality of the experience, and all of our interactions from booking to re-confirming and logistics were fantastic. The preparation materials were very clear and prepared us well for what to expect.

Mount Stephen Fossil Beds

We had a great hike, thanks in part to really nice weather. It was a lot steeper than anticipated, but everyone made it, even a 6-year old... thanks in part to the good pacing and patience of our guides, Cam and Rob. It was Cam's first tour as a full guide, and he did well. Rob, although he was staying out of the spotlight, was clearly very experienced and knowledgeable. My children and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I would like to comment that our tour guide, Hugh, was excellent. His passion, energy and knowledge about the Burgess Shale and related topics was enlightening and entertaining and he proved to be a more than capable guide in safely navigating us to the Burgess Shale and back.

I wanted you to get some immediate feedback on how impressed by the hike and the guide we were. My boys loved Hugh - he was so good at keeping the kids engaged and also bringing a lot of educational content extending across a wide variety of scientific disciplines into the experience.
We will definitely be coming back and we have already made recommendations to friends and family. More to come when I'm not typing with thumbs!!
